An electric or invisible dog fence should serve primarily to demarcate the property or the territory of the dog so that he does not leave it. This can be the entire garden or certain areas such as the sandpit, the planted area, the garden pond or the swimming pool. An invisible dog fence aims to ensure that the dog associates the (unauthorized) leaving the property with the unpleasant electric shock. But that can have undesirable consequences. But more on that later.
The use of the invisible dog fence is not limited to the home or the garden. Even when camping holidays you can take the fence. Here, for example, the area around the caravan or motorhome can be secured. So your four-legged friends can not run away and explore the unknown area on their own.
Typically, this system consists of a wire, a radio transmitter and a radio receiver. In principle, the invisible dog fence works similar to the Teletakthalsbänder whose use in Germany is also prohibited by the way.
How does the invisible dog fence work?
The invisible dog fence is actually invisible, because the transmitter cable is hidden in the ground, or it is pulled just above the earth (at its own discretion and discretion). There is also a radio transmitter connected to the cable and a radio receiver, which in most cases is attached to your dog’s collar. These three components create a magnetic field in interaction. If the dog exceeds the limit of this magnetic field, he receives as a “punishment” a short surge. In this way your dog should learn to avoid this area.
There are also models that work without transmitting cable and are equipped only with transmitter and receiver. Here the range is usually 20 to 30 meters.
Most invisible dog fences also work in two stages. When the dog approaches the limit of its field of motion except for a certain proximity, a warning signal sounds. If the dog goes even closer to the forbidden property boundary, then the (slight) electric shock takes place, which then clearly tells your four-legged friend: So far and not further.
Some providers advise the dog owners to gently prepare the dog for the new parenting aid. So do not just install the fence, put the dog over the receiver and hope for the best. Maybe a gradual training is advisable here.
The advantages of the invisible dog fence
Yes, even with the somewhat controversial subject, such as the impact on the dog by the invisible dog fences, there are also benefits.
Among other things, the fence can be installed on almost any property and is uncomplicated to handle. It is suitable for both small and large dogs.
As mentioned above, this “fence” is not spatially bound. You can take him comfortably on vacation. In addition, it can be extended relatively uncomplicated.
Another way to use the invisible dog fence is, so to speak, the “escape guard”. Some dogs are true outbreak kings. Every little gap in the garden fence is found and – if that does not work – it is dug underneath it if necessary. Do you have such a small (or big) escapee king?
Possibly, the electric dog fence can remedy this situation, as a double safeguard, so to speak. Because this type of fence can neither be undermined nor skipped.
If your dog tries to pile up, he is reprimanded for his unwanted behavior by means of a surge. Maybe even just a few contacts with the fence will suffice to finally spoil his behavior.
Some of the invisible dog fences are also suitable for cats. So if you have an expensive purebred cat (of course this also applies to normal pets) and do not want your cat to leave the property, then an invisible fence may be the solution for you.
Especially for farms with agriculture such an invisible dog fence can be a good solution, since a complete fencing here is usually not practical. For example, the farmer (or farmer’s wife) has to work a lot with agricultural vehicles such as tractors. There is such a wooden fence but very quickly turned around or the farm dog escaped through the open gate.
With the invisible fence the dog stays within the yard and the farmer (or the farmer) does not have to open a gate cumbersome every time he goes out into the field.
